Abstract:

Copies of letters, reports, decrees, and miscellaneous papers relating principally to ecclesiastical affairs, compiled by González del Campillo, including material composed by him either as Bishop of Puebla or in an earlier subordinate capacity. Written for the most part in Spanish, with a few items in Latin, in the diocese of Puebla (Mexico), Mexico City, Spain, and Rome.
Vol. I. 652 p. [1776-1804] Unsigned letters or reports, probably from González del Campillo, or, in a few instances, from Bishop Victoriano López Gonzalo, addressed to the King, Viceroy Mayorga, or Bishop López Gonzalo, concerning the obligation of restitution, ecclesiastical posts in the Indies, reform of religious orders, benefices, and similar matters; two royal decrees-on benefice funds (1776) and an ecclesiastical appointment; a sermon (1804) delivered by the compiler; an episcopal edict on gambling; a legal file on the bequest of Juan Francisco López de Solís to a religious community; an anonymous laudatory oration; and notes.
Vol. II. 693 p. [1722-1800] Episcopal edict of López Gonzalo on marriage; letters, reports, and other papers, including many probably written by López Gonzalo or González del Campillo, and several addressed to the King, on marriage, ecclesiastical jurisdiction, ex-Jesuit communities in Puebla, administration of the Order of Bethlehemites, complaints of certain nuns, financial administration of religious funds such as the bequest of José de Arria (p. 585 ff.), religious asylum, and a flour shortage caused by governmental restrictions. The name "Manuel Ignacio Gonz.z d. Campillo," on p. 376, may be an original signature. Many papers in the collection are in this same handwriting.
Vol. III. 773 p. [1542-1786] Anonymous treatises on the ecclesiastical and political history of Spain, with a last will and "testament of Spain" in her decadence; opinions of fiscals on politico-ecclesiastical questions in Spain; anonymous discussions, and appended papal pronouncements (1542-1560) of Paul III, Julius III, and Pius IV on various matters, notably, taxation of the clergy and administration of benefices; opinion of the Augustinian, Juan de Mazurriaga, on ecclesiastical vacancies in the Indies; pleas (1786) addressed to the King and to Archbishop Núñez de Haro by the Puebla Dean and Chapter, protesting the transfer of Bishop López Gonzalo; and plea of 1777 to the King from the University of Mexico for more favor to American-born Spaniards in ecclesiastical appointments.
